[Japan] 가사마비 사우나: 도자기 도시의 기억을 굽는 건축

오름가마에서 영감을 받은 사우나

우지조노 아키텍츠는 일본 이바라키현 가사마시에 사우나 시설을 계획했다. 에도 시대부터 가사마 도자기와 세라믹 산지로 알려진 이곳은 도예 학교와 미술관, 골프 시설 등이 산재한 복합적 환경에 위치하면서도 주변으로 주거지가 밀집해 있다. 의복 없이 이용하는 시설이라는 특성상 건물과 개활지에 둘러싸인 사방이 포위된 듯한 조건으로 읽힐 수 있는 장소였다.

건축이 만들어내는 공간은 크게 사람이 머무는 장소와 동선이 흐르는 장소로 나눌 수 있다. 다른 말로 하면 ‘도시와 문화의 기억을 보존하는 장소’와 ‘새로운 흐름과 활동을 만들어내는 장소’라 할 수 있다. 본 프로젝트는 가사마 시 곳곳에 흩어져 있는 오름 가마에서 착안했다. 도자기 도시로서의 지역적 맥락을 반영해 공기와 사람 모두가 머물고 흐를 수 있도록 주변 환경과의 연결을 고려해 설계했다.

A sauna inspired by climbing kilns

We planned a sauna facility in Kasama City, known since the Edo period as a center for Kasama ware and ceramics. The site is surrounded by a complex mix of environments: scattered ceramics schools, art museums, and golf facilities, yet also densely lined with residential homes. As a facility intended for use without clothing, the site could be read as being in a four-sided siege situation, enclosed by buildings and open fields.

The spaces created by architecture are primarily composed of places where people linger and places where circulation flows. Alternatively, they can be expressed as ‘places that preserve and retain urban and cultural heritage’ and ‘places that generate fluid flows and activities.’ This project draws inspiration from the scattered climbing kilns dotted throughout the town, reflecting Kasama City’s heritage as a ceramics town. It was designed to connect the surrounding context by allowing air and people to both linger and flow.

 

 

외부 벽체는 탄화 삼나무로 마감했다. 지붕은 오름 가마를 연상시키는 단경사 형태로 평판 금속 시트를 사용했다. 지붕 경사는 지역에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 3:5 비율을 적용했다. 이나다석 자갈을 활용한 접근로가 건물을 둘러 대지의 경계를 시각적으로 형성하며 진입 계단은 외벽의 탄화 목재와 대지의 석재 포장과 조화를 이루도록 검은 콘크리트로 마감했다. 오름 가마에서 영감받은 단경사 지붕은 지역에 흩어진 가마의 이미지를 건축 형태로 반영해 장소성과의 관계를 드러낸다.

Externally, the walls are clad in charred cedar, while the roof features a single-slope design referencing climbing kilns, constructed with flat-laid metal sheets. The roof pitch adopts the locally common 3:5 slope. An approach path using Inada stone gravel surrounds the building, visually defining the site’s boundaries. The approach stairs are rendered in black concrete, a material chosen to harmonize with the exterior charred cedar cladding and the Inada stone paving of the grounds. The single-sloped roof, inspired by climbing kilns, incorporates the essence of kilns scattered throughout Kasama City, creating a form that responds to the region.

 

 

내부는 수평 동선과 수직 축을 중심으로 탈의실, 실내 공기욕 공간, 화장실과 샤워실을 통합적으로 배치했다. 이를 통해 진입부에서 사우나가 자연스럽게 보이는 명확한 평면 구성이 형성된다. 노천탕 공간에는 한 변 3m 규모의 아트리움을 두어 외부 시선은 차단하면서도 빛과 바람을 내부로 끌어들인다. 사우나 양옆에는 냉탕과 온탕을 대칭적으로 배치했다. 계단 하부에는 우물물을 활용한 도자기 욕조를 설치해 사계절 안정적인 냉탕 온도를 유지하도록 했다.

Internally, zoning places horizontal circulation paths and vertical axes, integrating changing rooms, an indoor air bath, and toilets/showers. This creates a clear floor plan where the sauna is visible from the approach. The open-air bathing area features a 3m square atrium. This design blocks views from Hill while allowing light and wind into the building. Symmetrically arranged around the sauna are the cold plunge pool and warm bath. Beneath the stairs sits a ceramic bath tub fed by well water, enabling year-round consistent temperatures for the cold plunge.

 

 

건물은 장작 난로의 불빛, 내부에 울려 퍼지는 우물물 소리, 아트리움을 통해 들어오는 빛, 노천탕을 가로지르는 계절의 바람 등을 통해 일상의 소음에서 벗어나 자연과 직접 마주하도록 한다. 다실의 로지露地정원* 동선이 다실 진입을 준비시키듯 사우나로 이어지는 건축적 축 역시 사우나의 열기와 냉탕의 정화 경험을 예비하는 장치로 작동한다.

The building confronts one with nature, distancing from daily clamor through the flickering flames of the wood stove, the sound of well water echoing within, light streaming through the atrium, and seasonal breezes flowing through the open-air bathing area. Just as the roji garden path in a tea house prepares one mentally for entering the tea room, this building’s axis leading to the sauna anticipates an experience of being warmed by the sauna and purified by the cold bath.

 

*로지露地 정원은 ‘이슬이 맺힌 땅’이라는 뜻이다. 아침 이슬의 명징함으로 현세의 번뇌를 씻어낸다는 숭고한 함의가 그 안에 있다. 다실로 향하는 이들이 좁은 길을 따라 걸으며 소란스러운 마음을 정돈하고 속세의 시름을 덜어내는 곳이다. 즉, 본 의식에 앞서 거치는 감각적 전이의 공간이라 할 수 있다.

 

 

사우나가 만들어내는 긴장과 이완의 경험, 그리고 건축이 지닌 방향성과 축을 결합해 자연의 에너지가 내부와 외부에 고르게 스며드는 균질한 공간을 만드는 것을 목표로 한다.

Through the tension and release of the sauna, combined with the building’s inherent directionality and axis, the aim is to create a homogeneous space where the energy of nature permeates both inside and out.
