[Japan] 시로 홋카이도 스나가와 공장: 지역 재생과 건축 디자인의 만남

이 프로젝트는 홋카이도 스나가와시에 위치한 코스메틱 브랜드 ‘시로Shiro’의 공장이다. 인근 탄광으로 번성했던 이 도시는 현재 점차 쇠퇴하고 있다. 브랜드 고향의 몰락을 마주한 시로의 창립자는 제품 대부분을 생산하는 기존 공장을 상점 및 카페와 결합해 재건하기로 결정했다. 외지인뿐 아니라 지역 공동체를 위한 장소를 만들겠다는 의도였다.

The project is a factory of the cosmetic brand Shiro, located in Sunagawa City, Hokkaido. The city which once prospered from the nearby coal mine is now slowly declining. Upon facing the decline of the brand’s hometown, the founder of Shiro decided to rebuild their factory, which produces the majority of the brand’s products, together with a new shop and café. The intention was to make a place not only for visitors but also for the local community.

 

 

건축가들이 구 공장을 처음 방문했을 때 인구가 희박한 마을에서 보기 드물게 노동자들에게서 넘치는 활기와 에너지를 발견했다. 이는 공장을 대중에게 개방한다는 아이디어로 이어졌다. 공장과 방문객 구역은 단 한 장의 유리창으로 분리되어 있으며 모든 제조 과정은 방문객 공간과 나란히 운영된다.

When the architects first visited the former factory, they felt a sense of livelinessand energy from the workers, something remarkable in the sparsely populated town. This led to the idea of opening the factory. The factory and visitor area are separated only by a single pane of glass, and the entire manufacturing processruns side by side with the visitor area.

 

 

지역 소재 활용에도 중점을 두었다. 가구 하부는 현지에서 벌채한 자작나무로 제작했다. 상판은 흰색 석고 마감 후 장인들이 정성스럽게 연마해 완성했다. 홋카이도 스나가와의 푸르고 울창한 자연경관에서 영감을 받은 이 디자인은 글로벌 시장으로 더 넓게 뻗어나가려는 시로의 비전을 담고 있다.

The design places a strong emphasis on the use of local materials. The furniture bases are crafted from birch wood sourced from the local area. For the tabletops, a white plaster finish was applied and then meticulously polished by skilled craftsmen. Inspired by the lush, verdant landscapes of Sunagawa, Hokkaido, the design embodies SHIRO’s vision of expanding its presence further into the global market.

 

 

매장 중앙의 ‘블렌더 랩’은 천장까지 곡선을 그리며 이어지는 원형 기둥을 중심으로 12개의 유리 실린더를 배치했다. 방문객은 기둥 주위를 거닐며 마음에 드는 향을 탐색할 수 있다. 제품 진열대는 원형 기둥을 중심으로 동심원상에 배열했다. 특정 진입점을 두지 않아 어느 방향에서든 자유롭게 접근하도록 설계했다.

The “BLENDER LAB,” located at the center of the shop, features 12 glass cylinders arranged around a circular pillar that curves elegantly into the ceiling. Visitors can wander around this central pillar to explore and discover their favorite scents. The product display tables are positioned concentrically around the pillar, designed to be approachable from all directions without a designated entry point.

 

 

이 구역의 높은 지붕은 자연광을 내부로 끌어들인다. 천창에서 들어온 햇빛은 방문객 공간에서 먼저 확산된 후 직사광선 제어가 필수적인 공장 내부로 유입된다. 현대 사회에서 분리된 생산과 소비가 자연스러운 방식으로 공존하는 공간을 만드는 것이 프로젝트의 목표였다.

The elevated roofs in this area allow entry of natural light. Sunlight from the clerestory windows is diffused in the visitor space before entering the factory, where careful direct sunlight control is mandatory. The aim was to create a space where production and consumption, now separated in this modern day,can coexist in a natural way.
